How One Nonprofit is Using Outsourced Accounting Services to Support Challenges From COVID-19

by | Oct 4, 2020

It’s no surprise at all that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected organizations, big and small, on a variety of fronts.

While trying to maintain mission-driven objectives and goals, organizations have had to pivot programming, fundraising, office and staff management, and much more.

Additionally, organizations have had to navigate the myriad of relief aid offered at the local, state, and federal levels. The pressure on nonprofit organizations is tremendous, but at NFP Partners, we’ve been inspired by the organizations ready to take on these unprecedented challenges.

How KIND Has Worked With COVID-19

Kids in Need of Dentistry (KIND) is one of these organizations. KIND is a Denver, Colorado-based organization whose mission is to provide dental and orthodontic care to children regardless of their ability to pay. KIND has treated over 12,000 children since 2019. They’ve also provided over $1 million in free or reduced-cost dental care. They have been a client of NFP Partners since April 2019.

To say KIND has found a way through the COVID-19 pandemic would be an understatement. Just like many nonprofits, KIND struggled with navigating the COVID-19 pandemic while making their offices safe and healthy for operating.

“The greatest challenge Kids In Need of Dentistry has had during the pandemic is getting our three Dental Clinics back up and running with compliant PPE gear and proper social distancing techniques, to ensure the continued health and safety of our patients and their families.” KIND’s Operations Manager, Mariellen Goldberger said. “We found a way to assist patients remotely using Teledentistry via Zoom, and a successful Facebook fundraising campaign enabled our Clinic Team to get the much-needed PPE quickly,” she continued.

Accounting Services During a Pandemic

When it comes to accounting, Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) applications and cash flow tracking were at the front of KIND’s mind. Equipped and ready, NFP Partners jumped in to support.

“NFP Partners stepped right up to assist us with PPP loan applications and created a plan to easily track cash flow on a weekly basis. The pandemic came just as our annual audit began. Nevertheless, our NFP Partners team kept up the pace and completed the audit on time without missing a beat, Mariellen said. “The NFP Partners team has also kept us abreast of the many changes in the COVID-19 laws and regulations that seem to keep coming weekly,” she continued.

As you can imagine, accounting and office management has not been the only areas of change given by the novel coronavirus pandemic. Nonprofits across the nation have also had to adjust their organization’s operations and fundraising efforts. Kids in Need of Dentistry is no different.

“KIND did not let the pandemic ruin our annual Strokes of KINDness Golf Tournament. Thanks to the clever KIND Fundraising Team, we successfully transitioned to a socially-distanced version of our tournament, whereby anyone could play a round of golf, from anywhere, and donate the amount they paid for their greens fees to KIND. It was not only a big hit, but we also met our fundraising goal,” Mariellen said.
